The gala opening of the new Copenhagen Opera House was in January 2005. The first opera performances, Aida with Roberto Alagna as Ramades, took place in February 2005. The dramatic impact of major but silent set movements, employed to great theatrical effect in the opening gala and the opening production of Aida, is a major success of the project. Another remarkable aspect of the project was that it proceeded from concept to completion in less than 4 years, an incredibly short period for the design and construction of an opera house. This overall acoustic design of the building has been described in other papers. The Operaen was a gift to the people of Denmark from Mr Moller, the head of the AP Moller Foundation and the former owner of Maersk. Maersk is the largest shipping line in the world, owns a commercial airline and shipyards and has extensive oil and gas and industrial assets.
