Modelling Phosphorus, Carbon and Nitrogen Dynamics in Terrestrial Ecosystems

A large number of integrated carbon and nutrient cycling ecosystem models have been developed during the last 20 years (VEMAP members, 1995). These models have been used to simulate plant production, nutrient cycling and soil carbon dynamics at site,regional and global scales (Running, 1994; Schimel et al, 1997). The majority of these models include carbon and nitrogen cycling, with few of the models including linked cycling of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Many of the models have been used to investigate the impact of climate change and management practices on temperate agriculture, grassland, and forest systems where nitrogen is the primary nutrient limiting plant growth. However, in tropical and subtropical ecosystems, phosphorus may be morelimiting to plant growth than nitrogen (Vitousek and San-ford, 1986; Vitousek and Farrington, 1997). The CENTURY model is one of the few large-scale ecosystem models that include the linked cycling of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. However, global useof CENTURY has not included phosphorus cycling, since regional phosphorus cycling data are scarce. A number of plant-soil models with linked carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles have been developed for predicting short-term (10-20 years) inorganic andorganic nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics in agricultural systems. These models include the EPIC model (Jones et al., 1984), the GLEAMS model (Knisel et al., 1993), the ANIMO model (Kroes and Rijtema, 1998), the phosphorus model developed by Daroub et al.(2003) and the CREAMS model.
