Due to today's dynamic market, manufacturers require machining systems that provide low cost, high quality, and highly responsive solutions. These manufacturing systems can be designed in many different configurations. Hence, it is important to analyze a systems' performance quickly and effectively. A systematic method for evaluating the overall performance of different machining system configurations is needed. This paper discusses methodologies currently being developed at the University of Michigan for evaluating machining system performance with respect to productivity, quality, scalability, and convertibility. These methodologies can be further developed into an integrated system performance model. A case study shows some preliminary conclusions for the performance analysis of different configurations of machining systems.
