In 2004, Eastman Chemical Company installed a raw gas acetylene hydrogenation reactor system employing a Pd-based catalyst in one of their Longview, TX ethylene facilities. To prevent and protect against possible temperature excursions (runaway reactions), a safety instrumented shutdown system (SIS) that met ISA S-84 standards was designed and installed. This paper will provide an overview of the reactor system and the associated "shutdown triggers", the SIS design process including hazard reviews, instrumentation selection, and functional testing strategies, and lessons learned since start up of the new unit.
