FASCINATION OF THE MICRO- AND MACROCOSM - MORPHOLOGIES OF SCIENCE AND OF THE TYROLEAN ALPS

Twenty years of experience with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and metallography have inspired the author, to show a collection of striking examples of micrographs of intrinsic structural beauty. Harmonic structures, marvellous or ludicrous SEM- micrographs of inorganic materials will be followed by some examples from the living microcosm. A glimpse into atomic and even subatomic dimensions by field ion microscopy and bubble chamber photographs demonstrates the basic symmetry, harmony and beauty down to the very limit of microcosm. And frequently, striking parallelisms to our macroscopic world can be detected which ultimately lead to some outstanding macroscopic structures and morphologies of the Alps. This is an experiment, which tries to encompass scientific work and relevant structures and morphologies of the microcosm with morphologies of the original environment of the author, the Tyrolean Alps. It should emphasize the totalitarian aspect of our existence as scientists and human beings in a specific environment. For it is not only in architecture-where it is most obvious-that art and science combine to the benefit and pleasure of man. Maybe this presentation can also contribute to this general desire and search of man: the search for beauty.
