Glow discharge is a rapid method for the analysis for a broad range of coatings on metal and non-metal substrates. Glow Discharge is capable of analyzing coatings and layers that range from nanometers to more than 100 micrometers (?m) in thickness and an analytical dynamic range from trace concentrations to 100 percent. It is useful as a tool for quality and production control. It offers opportunities for R&D in setting up production lines and in the study of defects encountered during material production. It is not the intent here to describe the lamp performance and glow discharge in great detail. This simplistic overview is intended to be an introduction to understanding the use of the technique.
