Training Crane Operators to their Crane Drive Systems

Ever since the architect sold the pharaoh on that "pyramid scheme" in antiquity, heavy loads required ingenuity to move them, and so was born the crane and with it, the crane operator. Crane operators have in some cases taken a great deal of verbal abuse from maintenance as to being the cause of the crane problems. The crane operator is a necessity in most operations and the better the operator is the less down time and less maintenance costs are incurred. In the last few years we have seen some higher profile crane accidents involving overhead cranes. While not enough information has been tallied to make definitive statements like crane accidents are on the rise, these high profile accidents have captured the attention of organizations like OSHA. Information is still lacking because the number of near misses or minor injuries are not being reported.
