A New Method For The Rapid Determination Of Aluminum Content In Liquid Steel Containing Titanium

A cost-saving technique for the calculation of the aluminum content in liquid aluminum-killed steel containing titanium has been developed. This technique employs an empirical equation that alters the mV output from a normal low-level oxygen probe as a function of the titanium specification. The validity of the equation has been verified by extensive production use in a degasser and by thermodynamic calculations with the first- and second-order interaction coefficients for titanium with oxygen. The equation, programmed into the Minco MetNet instrument, is activated via a button on the instrument touch screen. The equation also can be programmed into the plant process control computer.
