Due to particle retention by membrane separation, membrane bioreactors (MBRs) can be operated at much higher sludge concentrations than conventional activated sludge systems (CAS). This generally results in a higher effluent quality. The removal of dissolved organic compounds, measured as the chemical oxygen demand (COD) or biochemical oxygen demand, is well described. However, it is not clear at present whether MBRs have the potential to achieve a better mineralization of micropollutants.
