MOSSBAUER STUDY OF Fe(II) REACTED WITH ENVIRONMENTALLY RELEVANT SURFACES

Recent spectroscopic measurements have demonstrated that interfacial electron transfer occurs between sorbed Fe(II) and structural Fe(III) in iron oxides. Few spectroscopic measurements, however, are available of Fe(II) sorbed on mixed-valent Fe minerals, as well as Fe sulfides and other environmentally relevant surfaces. Here we used ~(57)Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy to examine the spectroscopic characteristics of Fe(II) reacted with magnetite (Fe3O4) and several other environmentally relevant surfaces, including aluminum oxides and microbial cells. The spectroscopic characterization of the redox behavior of sorbed Fe(II) will provide new insights into the biogeochemistry of Fe in anoxic, subsurface environments.
