Environmental water quality analysis is an important area of study within analytical chemistry. Specifically, the detection of trace amounts of metal cations continues to be a challenge due to detection limits and cost of analysis. Because of this, we have examined the ability of specifically designed polymers to preconcentrate metal cations from aqueous solution. The synthesis of the monomers involved amide formation using dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) as seen in the reaction mechanism in Scheme 1.
