Natural organic matter (NOM) is ubiquitous in natural water systems and present in higher concentration than that of many trace toxic contaminants of interest. In the structural point of view, NOM consists of the complex structure of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons that have contained ionizable representative function groups, such as carboxylic, phenolic functionalities. It has been reported that NOM usually ranges from several hundreds to a few hundred thousands in molecular weight and 0.5-5 nm in average size. The nature of NOM is typified by negative charging of surface attributed from ionizable functional groups. NOM molecules are also considered as the precursor of carcinogenic by-products in water and inevitable materials affecting fate and transportation of all problematic species. In conventional water treatment processes, activated carbons (AC) have been widely used to adsorb NOM. However, the lower molecular weight NOM is preferentially adsorbed by AC, because AC mainly contains micropores (pore diameter < 0.7 nm) on the surface. In order to meet the water quality standard and prevent the deposition of NOM on the surface of membranes that have been usually used in water treatment, effective adsorption materials should be developed.
