A video supported method for industrial investigations of flame retardancy is presented. The method shown,is designed for glow wire or small burner treatment and applies a fully automated, and therefore objective, optical investigation of all relevant flame information e.g.ignition behavior, flame spread and dripping. In application of the method,an example is given that shows the influence of different inorganic fillers on flame spread and ignitability. The latter is an important requirement with regard to current European safety requirements in electro-applications.A quick overview on new commercially available halogen free flame retardant systems for glass fiber reinforced polyamide and polybutylene terephthalate is given. In this context, the flame retardancy of different flame retardant systems is discussed in more detail by analyzing their burning behavior.
