Supply Chain Risk Management - Reducing Supply Risk with Material-Supplier Portfolio

Due to the multitude of involved, independent companies, today's supply chains are already difficult to control. As a result of the increasing uncertainty of the procurement and sales markets, supply chains are additionally subject to rising risks. Supply chain risks are for example caused by uncertain demand or unreliable suppliers. This article is focussed on supply risk. Sources of supply risk are analysed and their impact is shown on an industrial case study. Further, the material-supplier risk portfolio is presented that introduces to consider risk issues in the supplier evaluation and selection process. The method assesses the risk that is perceived by the purchased material and the capability of suppliers to cope with risk. This enables companies to select appropriate suppliers for each material, so that the supply risk is systematically reduced. Finally, the successful application of the method at a semiconductor equipment manufacturer is described.
