The two main hurdles to implementation of high strength steels for automotive applications are the ability to join these materials and to form them into accurate and repeatable shapes. Using Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) can be especially challenging because of the work hardening capacity that allows them to be formed into complex shapes with high strengths. High work hardening rates and high panel strength levels both lead to increased springback which must be controlled by good tooling design, repeatable manufacturing processes, and consistent material properties. Unfortunately, the usual tools for controlling springback, such as high binder force and sharper die radii are not always feasible due to material formability and press capacity limitations.
