The complexity of some power systems, influenced also by the particular geographical shape of the hosting country or by the peculiar structure of the electricity grid not evenly meshed, sets the need to tackle network simulation in a more complete and comprehensive. In case of electrical system strongly affected by electromechanical issues, steady state analysis are not sufficient. Thus, it is necessary to add transient analysis in order to evaluate the actual severity of critical contingencies, taking into account regulations, protection relays and special protection schemes. The aim of this paper is to show the main features of the new Dynamic Security Assessment (DSA) platform, jointly developed by Terna and CESI, which leverages on a strong relationship between steady state and transient simulation engines and is supported by a user friendly interface. The tool is also strictly related to a very complex and powerful system able to activate Special Protection Schemes which contribute to solve many of the instabilities detected by the DSA platform.
