Utilisation of an electromagnetic ring network to provide electricity supply from the National Grid, Transmission System Operator (TSO), 400 kV/275 kV transmission network to the Electricity North West Limited, Distribution Network Operator (DNO), 132 kV distribution network is a common engineering practice in the United Kingdom. This network configuration allows the electricity supply to be shared by 400/132 kV or 275/132 kV super grid transformers (SGT) at various Grid Supply Points (GSP) and provides the DNO 132 kV network with multiple points of voltage support. This running arrangement, however, may experience equipment overloads in the DNO 132 kV network due to large power flow diversion to the distribution network during outages of transmission circuits. Overloads on the DNO distribution network may also be expected due to demand growth or connection of distributed generation. In addition, voltage issues including low voltage profile, large voltage step changes, voltage instability or even voltage collapse may be anticipated in the DNO distribution network in heavy loading conditions. Both thermal overload and voltage issues must be considered in unison during network planning to ensure that the DNO distribution network has adequate capacity to meet the projected demand level.
