Doctors Perception to Bio-models - Experiment, Survey, and Recommendation

This paper discusses physician's opinion of bio-models as an effective tool for the design and optimization of medical devices and in the evaluation of new therapeutic techniques. Physical replicas (n=17) were manufactured from images of Cardiovascular CV structures of patients with a variety of malformations, to use them to asses the physicians responses. A survey/interview technique was used to perform the assessment. In such an application the researcher has to decide on, the questioner goals, population of interest, select a sample, decide on surveying technique, design a questioner that fits the application, and rehearse questioner. A total of 19 physicians and fellows in the pediatric cardiology department at Texas Children Hospital, were surveyed. Physicians rated the bio-models as very useful to useful in surgery planning, rehearsal, use in the catheterization laboratory, communication and as a teaching aid. Approximately 45% of experts interviewed perceive the models as at least a very useful tool. The paper also discusses recommendations on interviewing/surveying techniques related to the field of Medical RP.
