The ability of professionals to maintain the industry is under threat. While this century will not be a replay of the last, many of the wise employment and training practices of the past should be re-examined and. where appropriate, reintroduced in a 21~(st) Century format. The mining industry requires a very high proportion of university graduates, but will not get them under current conditions. In the past The AusIMM played a key role in professionalism throughout the minerals industry. Its role has diminished somewhat through a long period of 'economic rationalism' but it has the potential to bring together all of the participants and to help resolve the issues. To achieve this, it must find ways to involve and influence the city-based mangers of multinational corporations, who are often not 'technical' graduates themselves. The suggested solutions require more active involvement in The Institute by all minerals industry professionals.
