PESTICIDES AND FISH PONDS ECOSYSTEMS IN THE DOMBES WETLAND REGION (FRANCE): FROM CULTIVATED FIELDS TO FISH

The Dombes area is a specific French wetland region with more than one thousand of ponds whose water comes only from rainfall (1000 to 1100 mm/year); a very complex man made hydrological system, built in the Xllth century and maintened from the beginning, allows to collect the water from each ponds' catchments. The latter are mainly covered by crops, forests and grasslands. Furthermore, ponds are organized in chains and each pond can be emptied in another one during the annual water evacuation in order to prepare fish harvesting. The traditional fish farming practices are quite extensive. The carp represents the principal breeded species (about 60-65%) and is, with pike, predominantly bounded to the food market. Faced to difficulties to enhance theeconomic devlopment of these products, producers have been involved in a collective approach to developp an official quality sign (PGI) for carp and pike from Dombes.
