Creating authentic and compelling web-based science experiences for the public: Examples from Live @ the Exploratorium series

For most of the public, the activity of science and scientists is a great mystery. Not only does the public not understand the nature of science, for many it does not seem to be a very inviting endeavor in the first place. This is not so surprising when one considers that the last experience most people have had "doing science" was in fact in high school biology or chemistry laboratory. These experiences have as much to do with real scientific activity as piano lessons have to the life of a concert pianist.
