Unlike some pest species, aphids have so far proved slow to develop resistance to neonicotinoid insecticides. The species of greatest concern at present is the peach-potato aphid, Myzus persicae, which exhibits up to 18-fold resistance in bioassays with imidacloprid and shows correlated responses to other neonicotinoid molecules. As yet, this resistance does not significantly compromise control efficacy, but it could act as a 'springboard' for the development of more potent resistance. A new SA-LINKproject (LK0953) is investigating resistance risks with a view to formulating management recommendations for the neonicotinoid class as a whole.
