The principal guidelines governing the proper design and operation of tundishes employed in the production of continuously cast specialty steels, such as austenitic and ferritic stainless steels and oriented and non-oriented silicon electrical steels, are no different than those that are required for the production of high quality aluminum-killed carbon steels. As is the case for carbon steel, care must be taken to ensure that: Liquid steel is properly shrouded from the atmosphere during the transfer process from the ladle to the mold Proper flow control is employed to promote inclusion removal Slag entrapment and vortexing are avoided. Refractories and slags that come into contact with the liquid steel during its journey through the tundish are properly selected to minimize the pickup of harmful contaminants.
