Watershed scale hydrologic simulation models HSPF and SWAT were used to model thehydrology of the 2150 square miles Iroquois River watershed located in the south eastern corner of theIllinois River watershed. Both models are part of the BASINS modeling system that facilitates pre- andpost-processing of data as well as data input to the models using an ArcView GIS interface and GUI. HSPFhas been widely used for different watersheds all over the US. SWAT was added to the BASINS in 2001and is under evaluation. Based on the completeness of the meteorological data, a nine year period of 1987-1995 is used for model calibration, and a 16 year period of 1971-1986 for model validation. Time seriesplots as well as statistical measures such as R2, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, and the percentage differencesbetween observed and simulated streamflow values on monthly and annual basis were used to verify theprediction abilities of the models. Calibration and validation results from both HSPF and SWAT show thatthe models generally predict daily, and average monthly and annual stream flows close to the respectiveobserved stream flows.
