One of the many alluring features of photonic crystals is the potential they offer as a host for achieving nonlinear optical functionality at modest optical powers. Passive optical limiters, all-optical frequency converters, and optically-controlled switches could find important application in optical communication systems if they are compatible with low-cost lasers that operate at power levels on the order of tens of milliwatts.
