Ever increasing demand for petroleum based products has resulted in more demand for light hydrocarbon resources. The trend has been towards utilizing low value heavy crude oils that have high sulfur content and high viscosity, properties that reduce their value and make them difficult to process in current refineries. Technologies that are effective for upgrading heavy oil feedstocks (including tar sands, bitumen, and heavy petroleum) are required to ensure cost-effective production of transportation fuels and other petroleum based products.
