It sounds like a cliche to point out the importance of seeing the brain as a system. Even so, today we do not understand the essential systems level features that makes it possible for the brain to realize its remarkable functionality, including dynamical adaptability, sensorimotor coordination, conceptualization, and context dependent learning. In this paper, some essential systems level features of the brain are discussed, based on recent neurophysiological evidences. Data from binocular rivalry experiments are presented as a specific instance. Finally, some basic constraints that a systems level brain model should satisfy are proposed.
