Pickering or Ramsden emulsions are emulsions, which are solely stabilised by small particle such as silica, carbon nanotubes , polystyrene latex particles and microgels. Particle-stabilised emulsions are extremely stable due to the irreversible adsorption of particles at the interface between the dispersed and continuous phase. It is even possible to stabilise Pickering high internal phase emulsions (Pickering-HIPEs) having internal phase levels of up to 80 vol.% solely by 1 wt.-% oleic acid modified titania or silica particles . Such emulsions can be used as emulsion templates for the synthesis of highly porous polymer foams, so-called poly-Pickering-HIPEs if the components of the continuous phase are polymerisable . However, the resulting polymer foams are close-celled.
