Poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and its derivatives have been extensively studied for their application in light-emitting devices and in plastic solar cells. Few examples of sulfur-containing PPVs are found in literature. Moreover, the polymers reported are not fully substituted with sulfur-bearing groups but are alternated copolymers. The allure of sulfur-containing PPVs is that they can be functionalized to obtain electron-deficient (i.e. acceptor) polymers, making the materials good candidates for solar cells.
