The yield potential of a CMS line and hybrid Fl seed production is one of most important factors in hybrid rice development. It was determined mainly by the percentage of exerted stigma (PES) of CMS lines. The CMS lines with higher PES usually have high fertility resulting in high yield in seed production. There is great genetic diversity of PES among rice varieties. Several studies indicated that the PES of paddy rice was controlled by a few quantitative traits loci(QTL) in irrigated conditions (Chen et al, 2001; Uga et al., 2003; Li et al.,2003). In this study, a major effort was given to detecting the genetic factors influencing stigma exsertion in a recombinant inbred population (RIL), in both irrigated and drought conditions. The results have special significance in DT hybrid rice development, as water shortages and drought status become increasingly serious in China.
