When exposed to the marine environment, in spite of its high value of PREN, the duplex stainless steel (DSS) still suffers with severe localized corrosion, such as the pitting corrosion caused by the microorganisms, which is the so-called microbiological influenced corrosion (MIC). It is reported that 2205 DSS was susceptible to MIC, and a new yacht failed due to an extremely high corrosion rate (40 mm/y) of 2205 DSS due to MIC. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative motile rod bacterium, and widely distributed in nature. It is already confirmed that P. aeruginosa is an important marine corrosion-causing bacterium, whose MIC damage on metals has already been considered as a knotty economic and environmental problem.
