An investigation on specifications - component, source information areas, and contents

Specification of a product is the description of the product upon which its development is based. There are no hard and fast rules for the development of specifications. Past work in this area attempts to identify generic types of components within these specifications. Also there are efforts to map out the information areas from which these elements of specifications can be derived. However the contents under these categories include (a) Functions (b) Subassemblies and parts and (c) Performance characteristics and there appears to be no structured way for the inclusion of these categories of information. It is therefore safe to conclude that further work is required in this area. Once adequate definitions are established in this type an integrated framework incorporating all three types should be developed.
