Whilst the current generation of design methodologies continues to provide positive benefits in engineering, they tend to operate and be viewed independently of commercial business viability and management control processes. A new structured methodological framework is proposed that seeks to achieve a holistic approach by integrating engineering design practice with commercial inter and intra project management. By transferring the technology of design to the management systems, a technology transfer is effected. Traditional management hierarchies and having discrete business functional areas or departments, act against integration with the result that each organisation component may achieve only sub-optimisation. The new approach brings engineering discipline to the project management process and enables cross (business)-functional communication, prioritisation and risk assessment through measurement. The total systems model thereby resolves conflict between competing sub-units and other projects. A working model based on DFD (design function deployment) will be demonstrated. This familiar engineering framework is extended to include business function variables. The final model is linked through a bespoke software utility to provide What If? and Trade-Off analysis that provides an ongoing database for each stage of the project(s) from initial feasibility through to finished good sales.
