Funded research was undertaken to discover how innovative, award winning orgmisations plan their new product designs, typically, beyond ten years into the future. Following a description of the research there will be a discussion of some of the findings on how organisations prepare for the future as it relates to them. The results of this research have now been assessed and used to compile the new British Standard BS 7000 Part 1 'Guide to Managing Innovation' that was published at the end of 1999 (1).
