The occurrence of natural transition phenomena in periodic transition on axial compressor blades

Boundary layer transition phenomena in strongly decelerating flow on an axial compressor stator blade are investigated with a surface hot-film array. The behavior is similar to weak bypass modes observed in triggered spot experiments. There is strong evidence for instability waves preceding turbulent breakdown despite the high free stream turbulence levels involved.
