Hexavalent chromium plating has been used for many years to provide hard, durable coatings with excellent wear and corrosion resistance properties. Hexavalent chromium baths have come under scrutiny, however, because of the toxic nature of the bath and the effects on the environment and workers' health. This project, funded by the EPA, is investigating the various parameters affecting the plating of chromium from a trivalent chromium bath. This presentation is an update on accomplishments to date involving the bath chemistry, diffusion layer, and pulse reverse waveforms.
