Abstract: 'In-situ' weld-alloying/laser beam welding is utilized to join SiC particle reinforced aluminum alloy metal matrix composite (SiCp/Al MMC) with titanium as the alloying element. Microstructure of the weld is characterized as functions of alloying content and processing parameters. Formation of the needle-like Al$-4$/C$-3$/ phase is suppressed and a composite reinforced by TiC and Ti$-5$/Si$-3$/ phase is produced in the laser welded joint on SiCp/Al MMC by weld-alloying with titanium. It is demonstrated that 'in-situ' weld- alloying/laser beam welding is a promising processing method for joining of SiCp/Al MMCs. !9
