Since the first standard specification and first load table were adopted in 1928 and 1929 respectively, open web steel joists can be easily and dependably specified. Open web steel joists have performed reliably during the erection and in the support of floors and roofs. Using the Steel Joist Institute's Fortieth Edition, Standard Specifications, Load Tables, and Weight Tables for Steel Joists and Joist Girders, this paper will begin with the basic load information and develop the proper selection of K and KCS open web steel joists, LH and DLH longspan steel joists, and joist girders. The joist designations and erection bridging will be incorporated into the projects drawings and specifications. Concentrated loads, uplift due to wind, snow drifts, end moments, and joist axial loads due to bracing will provide examples of how non-uniform loads can be properly designated and communicated to the joist supplier through the contract documents. Camber, deflection and other serviceability issues will also be addressed.
