Impact of New Aircraft Design on Simulator Data Provisioning

Changes in commercial aircraft systems architecture, increased system complexity and interdependence, new training concepts, and compressed aircraft development schedules have all had significant impacts on the provisioning of simulator data. New approaches are required, and these affect virtually everyone in the industry - aircraft manufacturers, equipment suppliers, training device manufacturers (TDMs), regulatory authorities and training providers. This paper provides insight into a new development program and to some of the considerations that led to particular data provisioning solutions. Choices such as whether to provide aircraft code or a chart-driven model for a system controller are discussed and analyzed in some detail. The impact of maintenance training on data provisioning can also be significant, and is reviewed in the paper. Other relatively new factors include a focus on intellectual property rights and how to protect them, export control considerations and efforts to standardize data formats wherever possible. The paper discusses each of these factors, and describes how they are typically addressed. This includes a brief discussion of the FSEMC Simulator Data Issues working group and the ARINC Reports that the group developed to provide guidance regarding provisioning of certain types of simulator data. The primary objective of the paper is to increase understanding of the factors involved, so that more consistency can be brought to the requirements for and provisioning of data for training devices.
