Experimental Powder Flow Characterization and Two-Dimensional Deposition in the SAND-PAINTER

In this paper we are concerned with the problem of depositing two dimensional powder patterns, in essence automating the ancient Navajo art of Sand-Painting, or the even older mandalas of Tibetan Seraje monks. A review of current bulk material transport technology revealed a vacuum in the range of flow rates of interest. A novel vibrational Lvalve was created to address the need for powder flow control in the range below 1000mm{sup}3s{sup}(-1). Experimental design methods were deployed to investigate flow regulation through a vibrating conduit, ranging in diameter from 4 to 40 times the powder size. Short of analytical laws, we present data pertaining to such flow. The process parameters influencing the deposition rate, and geometric characteristics were also identified. The Sand-Painter is proposed as a new deposition process for powder- based layered manufacturing processes, opening novel materials and processes and gradient to an otherwise proven technology.
