摘要

Accurate knowledge of the interfacial heat transfer coefficients between a casting and its mold can significantly improve the utility of computer simulations for minimum design cycle time. As casting section sizes decrease, the interfacial heat transfer coefficient plays a larger role in determining the overall solidification rate. This report details an investigation to determine the interfacial heat transfer coefficients during resin-bonded sand casting of aluminum (A356). To obtain these results, instrumented plate castings were poured, and temperature data collected from these castings were used to solve the inverse heat conduction problem. The magnitude and variation of the heat transfer coefficient during solidification for resin-bonded sand molds are reported for three different section sizes.
