In vitro screening of plants extract for antibacterial activity against Xanthomonas species

Water extracts of leaves of thirty different plant species were screened under in vitro conditions, for their antibacterial activity against three species of Xanthomonas, an important phytopathogenic bacteria, by cup plate and disc diffusion methods.Extracts of Lawsonia inermis, oxalis corniculata, Prosopis juliflora and Punica granatum showed significant antibacterial activity. These plants when subjected to solvent extraction using petroleum ether, Benzene, Chloroform and Methanol, Prospis juliflora leaf showed significant inhibitory effect in methanol extract Further investigations are being done to exploit this potential to control seed borne bacteria.
