The formation of ash deposits reduces heat transfer rates to furnace wall tubes, superheater tubes, and other heat transfer surfaces in coal-fired power plants. The magnitude of this reduction largely depends on the thickness, thermal conductivity, and absorbtivity of the deposits. Each of these parameters is determined by the physical and chemical characteristics of the deposit, which, in turn, depend on the combustion conditions, the inorganic composition of the fuel, the processes by which the deposits are formed, reactions within the deposits, and reactions between the deposits and the furnace gases.
