A high cycle multiaxial fatigue criterion based on the distribution in volume of the strain energy density is proposed. The damaging part of this energy is that which exceeds a limit value depending on the material. SEM observations of damage initiation in a spheroidal graphite cast iron and fatigue tests under variable amplitude loadings were used to show this new limit below the usual endurance one. Whatever the loading is, involving a uniaxial or a multiaxial stress state, the predictions of the proposed criterion are loading dependent. This method was tested on smooth cylindrical specimens with several materials; calculations are in very good agreement with experiments.
