Application of linear elastic fracture mechanics and nonlinear dynamics theory to fatigue crack behaviour in metals

The use of the linear elastic fracture mechanics parameter stress intensity factor in the analysis and application of data for a long Stage II fatigue crack growing in a metallic material is reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on the interplay between applied mechanics and material response. For this to be done the crack path has to be known, but it is in general difficult to predict fatigue crack paths. Examination of the nonlinear dynamics concept of attractor, as a line or surface to which a fatigue crack path tends, shows that the concept does appear to be helpful in the prediction of fatigue crack paths.
