During the last years Wartsila* NSD has consistently enlarged its gas engine portfolio, introducing a range of new gas engines for different applications. The latest research and development work has been conducted on a 6-cylinder dual-fuel engine, the Wartsila* 50DF. The W50DF was designed to operate on natural gas or liquid fuel, offering flexibility in fuel choice. By utilizing the latest technologies developed by WNS related to combustion, the targets and expectations for efficiency and emission levels were high. A six-cylinder prototype unit was designed and have now passed the first test phase of mapping and verification of performance and reliability. The results were excellent and the initial tests have demonstrated a remarkable shaft efficiency of > 48%, at emission levels complying with the TA-luft requirements. The design of the 18-cylinder production engine which will reach a unit output of > 17 MW have started, and a retrofit package for diesel engines will also be developed, enabling conversion of existing plants to a low-emission alternative for future demands and fuel availability.
