It is well known that the curtain airbag is one of the most effective devices to protect occupant from being fatally injured during rollover and side impact crash accidents. The main purpose of this study is to establish design standards and requirements for curtain airbags for both rollover and side impact protections on the component level. For this, three stages of study were conducted in the present investigation. First, three SUV vehicles with curtain airbags were selected and numerical base models for them were constructed using the MADYMO software. Second, numerical simulations of curtain airbags for linear impact test modes were performed. In particular, FT (Pressure-Thickness) map concept was newly introduced for predicting the curtain airbag energy absorbing performance and four PT maps were generated according to four different velocity conditions. Finally, numerical simulations of ejection mitigation for rollover crash were performed for various combined conditions of velocity and delay time at different impact locations. The results were compared in order to better understand the severity of each test condition.
