Successful Trap Cropping for Colorado Potato Beetles

Trap cropping is one of those things people have heard about but seldom seen. For many vegetable growers, there seems to be a feeling that trap cropping takes too much time and will not really work in a commercial setting. You can have a successful trap crop with a little planning and a small amount of land management. Rotation is the easiest and best way to avoid Colorado potato beetle (CPB) problems. The farther away you can put this years crop of tomatoes, potatoes or eggplant from where you had them last year, the longer it will take the CPBs to find this years crop. Trap cropping makes most sense if you have a limited amount of land and your fields are fairly close together. If in the past you've had a problem with CPB, a trap crop will help eliminate the need for beetle sprays.
