In recent years the expenses associated with cotton seed have become excessive. The cost of high yielding varieties in addition to technology fees; and seed treatments for insects, pathogens, and potentially nematodes justify efforts to evaluate the effect of reduced plant populations on growth and yield parameters. Studies have shown that breeding efforts have altered the number of harvestable bolls per plant to a greater extent than any other characteristic. In addition, the available data clearlyportray year of cultivar release and seedcotton yield have a positive linear relationship, which is a good indicator for the potential of modern cultivars to compensate under reduced plant populations.
