Requirements for interlock design and documentation have changed radically in the past few years and companies need a simple method to determine a required safety interlock system's integrity level and prove that the interlock design meets that requirement. While there are ways to do this, most of the standards out today are complicated and require huge amounts of engineering time to design such systems. This paper chronicles a specialty chemical company's effort to create a safety interlock standard that is easy to use and does not require extensive control engineering experience to implement. The paper concludes with some suggestions that should be considered by any company trying to create a similar standard of their own. This information is presented for review by professionals who design safety interlock systems. The design of safety interlock systems is a complex process dependent upon many factors.
